Канун Нового 1954 года. В Петрово происходит очередное громкое преступление - ограблена касса в момент доставки денежных средств. Козырев, как и всегда, берется за расследование. Подозрение падает на Ефимова - бывшего сотрудника петровского ОВД, а ныне - инкассатора, и кассиршу Зубову, муж которой также сотрудник местной милиции. Ведь только они выжили после налета бандитов. Однако Козырев быстро понимает, что это дело рук банды Гангрены, который "рулит" районом после "гибели" Чалого... Прибывшие в Петрово уголовники рвутся "в бой" - и Гангрена предлагает им новое дело - ограбление ювелирного магазина. Налет происходит в новогоднюю ночь, когда сигнализация в открытом для посетителей накануне ювелирном еще не установлена..
